How Often Should You Oil an IPE Deck?
Once a year is the sweet spot for keeping an IPE deck rich and brown. Depending on how much sun it gets and how hard your winters are, some decks can stretch to once every two seasons — there is no single schedule that fits every deck.
What drives the timing
IPE grays under direct sunlight, so the more exposed your deck is, the more often it needs attention. The main factors:
- Sun exposure — a full-sun rooftop needs service more often than a shaded garden deck
- Winter — a harsh winter is hard on the finish
- Rain and moisture — wet seasons wear the oil down faster
Because of this, the honest answer is that no one schedule fits all. A heavily exposed deck may want service every year; a sheltered one may go a little longer.
What happens if you wait
You do not have to oil on a strict schedule — IPE will not be damaged if you let it gray. But the longer you wait, the more work it takes to bring back. A deck that has gone a few years without service usually needs sanding before it can be refinished. That is completely doable, it is just a bigger job than staying ahead of it with annual upkeep.
The easiest, most cost-effective path is regular yearly service. Keeping a deck maintained is far simpler than reviving one that has been left for years.
