Why Did My IPE Deck Turn Gray (And Can I Fix It)?

· Brooklyn Deck & Patio

IPE turns gray from direct sunlight. It is UV weathering, not rot or damage, and it does not hurt the wood. The good news: a grayed IPE deck can almost always be brought back to its original deep brown with cleaning, sanding, and oiling.

Why it happens

Every IPE deck left in the open will eventually silver to gray. Sunlight breaks down the surface layer of the wood, and the rich brown fades to a weathered patina. This is purely cosmetic — the board underneath is as hard and sound as the day it was installed.

There is no way to avoid it entirely. Even a deck that is oiled at the time of installation will gray over time and still needs ongoing service. Oiling slows the process and keeps the color longer, but the sun always wins eventually.

How fast it happens depends on your deck:

  • How much direct sun it gets through the day
  • How harsh the winter was
  • How much rain and moisture it sees

A fully exposed rooftop in Brooklyn grays faster than a shaded garden deck. There is no single timeline that fits every deck.

Can it be fixed?

Yes — almost always. We pressure wash only where it is needed, sand the boards where the surface calls for it, and finish with a penetrating oil. The gray lifts away and the original brown comes back, often to nearly the condition it was in when new.

If your IPE has gone gray and you want the warm brown back, our IPE maintenance and restoration service handles exactly this across Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. The fastest way to find out what your deck needs is to send us a photo for a free estimate.
