Rooftop Paver Systems

Porcelain and natural-stone pavers set on adjustable pedestals. The result is a level, low-maintenance rooftop floor that floats above the membrane so water drains freely and the roof stays easy to reach. Built for Brooklyn and Manhattan rooftops, terraces, and balconies where weight, waterproofing, and a flawless finish all matter.

Questions
What is a pedestal paver system?+

It is a rooftop or terrace floor built from porcelain or natural-stone pavers that rest on small adjustable pedestals rather than being glued or mortared down. The pedestals lift the pavers above the roof so water drains underneath and the surface stays perfectly level, even over a sloped or uneven roof.

Do pedestal pavers protect the roof and drain properly?+

Yes. Because the pavers float on pedestals above the waterproofing membrane, rain drains freely through the open joints and across the roof to the drains, so nothing pools on top. The membrane is never punctured or covered in adhesive, so it keeps breathing and stays protected.

Are rooftop pavers too heavy for my roof?+

A pedestal paver system is lighter than poured concrete or a mortar-set patio and spreads its load evenly across the roof. On most Brooklyn and Manhattan buildings it is well within capacity, but we always confirm the structure, and bring in an engineer where needed, before we build.

Can pavers be installed over an existing roof or terrace?+

Usually yes. If the roof membrane is sound, the pedestal system installs right on top of it with no demolition. We inspect the existing surface first and flag any waterproofing that should be addressed before the pavers go down.

What are the pavers made of?+

Most of our rooftop installs use 2 cm porcelain pavers that are dense, frost-proof, stain-resistant, and available in stone, wood, and concrete looks that stay true in the sun. Natural stone such as granite or limestone is also an option where you want a specific material. We help you choose for the light, the sightlines, and the maintenance you want.

Can pavers be leveled on a sloped roof?+

That is exactly what the pedestals are for. Roofs are built to slope toward drains; the adjustable pedestals take up that pitch height by height so the finished floor comes out dead level and comfortable to walk and furnish on.

Can the pavers be lifted for roof repairs?+

Yes, and that is one of the biggest advantages. Any paver can be lifted out by hand to reach the roof below for inspection or repair, then set right back. There is no demolition and nothing to break, which makes a pedestal system far kinder to a roof over its lifetime than a bonded patio.

How much do rooftop pavers cost and how long does it take?+

Cost depends on the size of the roof, the paver you choose, access to the roof, and how much the pedestals have to correct for slope, so we quote each job after a site visit. Most rooftop and terrace installs are completed in a few days once materials arrive, with far less mess than a traditional patio.
